a good many of olden times, 39 And a multitude of those of later time. 40 The Companions of the Left Hand,- what will be the Companions of the Left Hand? 41 (They will be) in the midst of a Fierce Blast of Fire and in Boiling Water, 42 And in the shades of Black Smoke: 43 Neither cool nor honorable. 44 They had been affluent before, 45 and would persist in heinous sinning, 46 And said: "What! When we are dead and turned to dust and bones, shall we then be raised again? 47 And also our forefathers?" 48 Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, the former and the later peoples 49 will indeed be gathered together at an appointed time on a Day known [only to God]: 50 Then you, you misguided ones, who deny the truth, 51 Will eat of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 and will have to fill your bellies therewith, 53 And drink over it scalding water, 54 You shall drink it as the thirsty camels drink." 55 This is their reception on the Day of Justice. 56 We have created you, then why would you not confirm it? 57 Have you thought about what (sperm) you ejaculate? 58 Is it you that create it or are We the creators? 59 It is We Who have ordained death among you, and We have not been beaten - 60 that We may exchange the likes of you, and make you to grow again in a fashion you know not. 61 You have surely known of the first creation. Why then, will you not remember! 62 Have you ever considered the seed which you cast upon the soil? 63 Is it you or We Who make them grow? 64 Had We wanted, We could have crushed it to bits and you would have been left to lament, 65 (Saying): "We are indeed Mughramun (i.e. ruined or lost the money without any profit, or punished by the loss of all that we spend for cultivation, etc.)! [See Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, Vol. 17, Page 219] 66 Rather, we have been deprived." 67 Have you thought about the water you drink? 68 Is it you who caused it to descend from the cloud, or is it We Who cause it to descend? 69 Were it Our Will, We could make it salt (and unpalatable): then why do ye not give thanks? 70 Tell Me! The fire which you kindle, 71 Is it you that produce the trees for it, or are We the producers? 72 It is We who have made it a means to remind [you of Us,] and a comfort for all who are lost and hungry in the wilderness [of their lives]. 73 Glorify, then, (O Prophet), the name of your Great Lord. 74
