The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the sun and its brightness 1 And the moon when she followeth him, 2 by the day, when it displays it, 3 by the night when it covers the earth with darkness, 4 Consider the sky and its wondrous make, 5 By the Earth and its (wide) expanse: 6 and by the soul and that (Power) which designed it 7 and inspired it to lewdness and godfearing! 8 Indeed he succeeds who purifies his ownself (i.e. obeys and performs all that Allah ordered, by following the true Faith of Islamic Monotheism and by doing righteous good deeds). 9 and those who corrupt their souls will certainly be deprived (of happiness). 10 The Thamud tribe rejected the truth because of their arrogance, 11 when the most wicked of them broke forth, 12 Then the messenger of God said to them, "This is God's she-camel. Let her drink." 13 In response they belied him, and hamstrung the she camel – so Allah put ruin over them because of their sins and flattened their dwellings. 14 for none [of them] had any fear of what might befall them. 15
