[AND the tribe of] Thamud gave the lie to [one of God's] message-hearers 141 When their fellowman Saleh said to them, “Do you not fear?” 142 Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger. 143 So fear Allah and obey me. 144 And I ask of you no hire therefor; MY hire is but with the Lord of the worlds. 145 "Do you think that you will remain here peacefully forever 146 "Gardens and Springs, 147 The fields of corn and date-palm trees with soft and tender spathes, 148 And dwellings hewed out of mountains ingeniously? 149 Have fear of God and obey me. 150 "And follow not the bidding of those who are extravagant,- 151 "Who make mischief in the land, and mend not (their ways)." 152 They said: "You are only of those bewitched! 153 Thou art but a human being like unto us. So bring thou a sign if thou art of the truth-tellers. 154 Salih said: "This is a she-camel. There is a day set for her to drink and there is a day set for you to drink. 155 Do not molest her lest the chastisement of an Awesome Day should seize you." 156 Then they hamstrung her; and then they became regretful. 157 So the torment took hold of them: verily herein is a sign, but most of them are not believers. 158 But, verily, thy Sustainer - He alone - is almighty, a dispenser of grace! 159
