The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the star when it sets: 1 your companion has neither strayed nor is he deluded; 2 And he does not say anything by his own desire. 3 It is only an Inspiration that is inspired. 4 taught him by one terrible in power, 5 Lord of power and wisdom. So he acquired poise and balance, 6 while he was in the highest horizon; 7 Then he drew near and drew closer 8 Till he was two bows length off or yet nearer. 9 and revealed to God's servant what he revealed. 10 The (Prophet's) (mind and) heart in no way falsified that which he saw. 11 What! do you then dispute with him as to what he saw? 12 And he certainly saw him in another descent 13 By the lote-tree of the utmost boundary, 14 close to the Garden of Refuge. 15 When that covered the lote-tree which did cover it! 16 The sight [of the Prophet] did not swerve, nor did it transgress [its limit]. 17 He certainly saw the greatest (signs) of the existence of his Lord. 18 HAVE YOU, then, ever considered [what you are worshipping in] Al-Lat and Al-Uzza, 19 And Manat, the third, the last? 20 What! for you the males and for Him the females! 21 This indeed is an unjust division! 22 These are only names which you and your fathers have invented. No authority was sent down by God for them. They only follow conjecture and wish-fulfilment, even though guidance had come to them already from their Lord. 23 Shall man have whatever he craves? 24 All that is in the life to come and all that is in this life belongs only to God. 25
