He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 Because there came to him the blind man (i.e. 'Abdullah bin Umm-Maktum, who came to the Prophet (Peace be upon him) while he was preaching to one or some of the Quraish chiefs). 2 How could you know? Perhaps he would cleanse himself, 3 or yet remember, and the Reminder profit him. 4 As for him who is not in want of any thing, 5 to him thou attendest 6 Though it is not your concern if he should not grow (in fulness). 7 But as for him who cometh unto thee with earnest purpose 8 and who has fear of God, 9 to him thou payest no heed. 10 NAY, VERILY, these [messages] are but a reminder: 11 So whoever wills may remember it. 12 On honoured leaves 13 Exalted and purified, 14 In the hands of scribes 15 Who are noble, virtuous. 16 Woe to man! How ungrateful he is! 17 From what thing doth He create him? 18 From a (sperm) drop He created him and then determined him, 19 He makes his path easy for him. 20 Then He causeth him to die, and putteth him in his grave; 21 then, He will raise him when He wills. 22 Yet man declines to do His bidding. 23 Then let mankind look at his food - 24 [how it is] that We pour down water, pouring it down abundantly; 25 and then We cleave the earth [with new growth,] cleaving it asunder, 26 and therein made the grains to grow 27 grapes, and fresh fodder, 28 and olives, and palms, 29 And enclosed gardens luxuriant. 30 and fruits and pastures – 31 For use and convenience to you and your cattle. 32 But, when the Blast comes, 33 That Day shall a man flee from his brother, 34 And his mother and his father 35 his wife and his children. 36 On that day, each one has just one issue, which is enough for him. 37 Some faces on that day shall shine 38 laughing and joyous 39 And faces on that Day! upon them shall be gloom. 40 Darkness will cover them, 41 those -- they are the unbelievers, the libertines. 42
