Nay, by the moon, 32 and the night when it retreats 33 And the dawn when it shineth forth, 34 That (Hell) is surely one of the greater (signs), 35 As a warning unto men, 36 to whoever of you desires to go forward or lag behind. 37 Every soul is pledged to what it does, 38 Except the people of the right hand, 39 In Gardens, they seek answers, 40 concerning the sinners, 41 "What has brought you into hell-fire?" 42 They will reply, "We did not pray, 43 and we did not feed the poor, 44 And we used to enter into vain discourse with those who engaged [in it], 45 "And we used to deny the Day of Judgment, 46 till the certainty (death) overtook us' 47 The intercession of the intercessors shall then be of no avail to them. 48 If such will be the Day of Judgment, what is the matter with them? Why do they run away from guidance, 49 like startled wild donkeys 50 fleeing before a lion? 51 Forsooth, each one of them wants to be given scrolls (of revelation) spread out! 52 Nay! but they do not fear the hereafter. 53 Nay, verily. Lo! this is an Admonishment. 54 Let him then who heeds remember it. 55 But they [who do not believe in the life to come] will not take it to heart unless God so wills: [for] He is the Fount of all God-consciousness, and the Fount of all forgiveness. 56
