Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
HaMeem 1 By the Clear Book. 2 We have sent it down in a blessed night (We are ever warning) 3 On that night is made distinct every precise matter - 4 A command from Us; surely We are the senders (of apostles), 5 As Mercy from thy Lord: for He hears and knows (all things); 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatsoever is in-between the twain, if only ye would be convinced. 7 La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He). It is He Who gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fore-fathers. 8 Yet they are in doubt, playing. 9 So watch for the day when the sky begins to emit clear smoke, 10 Which would envelope mankind. That would be a grievous affliction. 11 'O our Lord, remove Thou from us the chastisement; we are believers.' 12 How will there be for them a reminder [at that time]? And there had come to them a clear Messenger. 13 whereupon they turned their backs on him and said, "Taught [by others] is he, a madman"? 14 Yet We will hold the scourge back for a while, (but no sooner than We will do so) you will revert to your old ways. 15 One day We shall seize you with a mighty onslaught: We will indeed (then) exact Retribution! 16 ۞ And verily We tried before them Pharaoh's folk, when there came unto them a noble messenger, 17 Saying: restore to me the bondmen of Allah, verily I am unto you an apostle trusted. 18 And that do not exalt yourselves against Allah, surely I will bring to you a clear authority: 19 and, behold, it is with my Sustainer - and your Sustainer - that I seek refuge against all your endeavours to revile me. 20 And if you do not believe in me, then leave me alone. 21 Then he cried out to his Lord, "These are sinful people." 22 'Then set thou forth with My servants in a watch of the night; surely you will be followed. 23 And leave the sea intervening; surely they are a host that shall be drowned. 24 How many were the gardens and springs they left behind, 25 And fields and stately mansions, 26 and pleasant things in which they delighted! 27 Thus (it was)! And We made other people inherit them (i.e. We made the Children of Israel to inherit the kingdom of Egypt). 28 Neither heaven nor earth shed tears for them; nor were they respited, 29
