(The tribe of) Thamud denied the messengers (of Allah) 141 When their brother Saleh said to them: "Will you not take heed?" 142 Verily I am unto you an apostle trusted. 143 Have fear of God and obey me. 144 And I ask of you no hire therefor; MY hire is but with the Lord of the worlds. 145 Will ye be left secure in that which is here before us, 146 "Gardens and Springs, 147 And green crops (fields etc.) and date-palms with soft spadix. 148 And hew ye out houses in the mountains skilfully! 149 "But fear Allah and obey me; 150 Do not obey the orders of the transgressors 151 Who make mischief in the land and do not act aright. 152 They replied: "You are nothing but one of those who are bewitched; 153 Thou art but a human being like unto us. So bring thou a sign if thou art of the truth-tellers. 154 He said, "Here is a she-camel. She shall have her turn of drinking, as you have yours, each on an appointed day, 155 and do not touch her with malice so that there seize you the chastisement of a dreadful day.' 156 But they hamstrung her, then regretted; 157 So the torment overtook them. Verily, in this is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not believers. 158 Your Lord, He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 159
