Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the dawn, 1 And [by] ten nights 2 The multiple and the one, 3 And the night when it departeth, 4 Indeed in that there is an oath for a man of sense. 5 Seest thou not how thy Lord dealt with the 'Ad (people),- 6 Of the (city of) Iram, with lofty pillars, 7 Like whom no one else was born in the cities. 8 And with Thamud who carved rocks in the valley; 9 And with Pharaoh of the tent pegs 10 [All of] whom oppressed within the lands 11 spreading in them much corruption? 12 So your Lord poured upon them a scourge of punishment. 13 surely thy Lord is ever on the watch. 14 As for man, when his Lord tests him, through honour and blessings, he says, "My Lord has honoured me," 15 But when He tries him (differently), then straitens to him his means of subsistence, he says: My Lord has disgraced me. 16 Nay, nay! but ye honour not the orphans! 17 Nor do ye encourage one another to feed the poor!- 18 And you devour inheritance all with greed, 19 And you love wealth with exceeding love. 20 Nay! When the earth is ground to powder, 21 and [the majesty of] thy Sustainer stands revealed, as well as [the true nature of] the angels; rank upon rank? 22 And when hell is brought that day – on that day will man reflect, but where is the time now to think? 23 He shall say: O! would that I had sent before for (this) my life! 24 On that day the punishment of God and His detention will be unparalleled. 25 nor will any bind as He binds. 26 O the contented soul! 27 Return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him], 28 Enter thou among My servants! 29 And enter into My garden. 30
