The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O thou enveloped in thy cloak, 1 Rise up and warn! 2 And thy Sustainer's greatness glorify! 3 and purify your robes, 4 And pollution shun. 5 And do not through giving seek thyself to gain, 6 But for your Lord be patient. 7 For when the Trump is sounded 8 that day will be a harsh day, 9 For the unbelievers, anything but easy. 10 Leave him to Me whom I created alone, 11 And to whom I granted extensive wealth 12 And sons dwelling in his presence, 13 To whom I made (life) smooth and comfortable! 14 Yet he desireth that I should give more. 15 Not at all! Surely, he has been disobedient to Our verses. 16 Soon I shall mount him on Saood, the hill of fire. 17 He planned and plotted. 18 So let him be cursed! How he plotted! 19 Again, ruin seize him, how did he hatch a scheme? 20 Then he thought; 21 then he frowned, and scowled, 22 and in the end he turns his back [on Our message,] and glories in his arrogance, 23 and said: “This (Qur'an) is merely a sorcery of yore; 24 This is nothing but the word of mortal man!" 25 Him shall I soon roast in Hell. 26 And what knoweth thou that which the Scorching Fire? 27 It does not allow to live, and neither leaves [to die,] 28 it scorches the skin; 29 Over it are appointed nineteen. 30 We have not appointed the guards of hell, except angels; and did not keep this number except to test the disbelievers – in order that the People given the Book(s) may be convinced, and to increase the faith of the believers – and so that the People given the Book(s) and the Muslims may not have any doubt – and so that those in whose hearts is a disease and the disbelievers, may say, “What does Allah mean by this amazing example?” This is how Allah sends astray whomever He wills, and guides whomever He wills; and no one knows the armies of Allah except Him; and this is not but an advice to man. 31
