A large group from the earlier generations. 39 and a throng of the later folk. 40 And the fellows on the left hand; how miserable shall the fellows on the left hand be! 41 (They will be) in the midst of a Fierce Blast of Fire and in Boiling Water, 42 And the shade of black smoke. 43 Neither cool nor refreshing. 44 They were endowed with good things 45 And were stubborn upon the great sin (of disbelief). 46 and constantly said: 'What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we then be restored to life? 47 And so will our fathers?" 48 Say (unto them, O Muhammad): Lo! those of old and those of later time 49 Will be gathered together on a certain day which is predetermined. 50 "Then will ye truly,- O ye that go wrong, and treat (Truth) as Falsehood!- 51 Will be eating from trees of zaqqum 52 "Then you will fill your bellies therewith, 53 Then drink over it of boiling water; 54 Drinking even as the camel drinketh. 55 This is their entertainment on the day of requital. 56 We have created you, then why would you not confirm it? 57 Did you ever consider the sperm that you emit? 58 Is it you who create it (i.e. make this semen into a perfect human being), or are We the Creator? 59 We mete out death among you, and We are not to be outrun, 60 Had We so wished, nothing could have hindered Us from replacing you by others like yourselves, or transforming you into beings you know nothing about. 61 You have known the first growth; so why will you not remember? 62 Behold! that which ye sow. 63 Is it you who cause them to grow or do We? 64 If We will, We would make it broken stubble and you would remain wondering, 65 'We are debt-loaded; 66 "Nay, but we are deprived!" 67 Have ye observed the water which ye drink? 68 Do ye bring it down (in rain) from the cloud or do We? 69 If We had so pleased, We could have made it bitter. So why would you not give thanks? 70 Tell Me! The fire which you kindle, 71 Is it ye who grow the tree which feeds the fire, or do We grow it? 72 We have made it a Reminder (for the Hell-fire, in the Hereafter); and an article of use for the travellers (and all the others, in this world). 73 Then celebrate with praises the name of thy Lord, the Supreme! 74
