(The tribe of) Thamud denied the messengers (of Allah) 141 Their brother Salih asked them, "Why do you not fear God? 142 I have been sent as a trusted messenger to you. 143 so fear you God, and obey you me.' 144 I do not ask for any payment for my preaching. I shall receive my reward from the Lord of the Universe. 145 "Do you think that you will be left secure [forever] in the midst of what you have here and now? 146 amidst [these] gardens and springs 147 And cornfields and palm-trees having fine spadices? 148 And you carve out of the mountains, homes, with skill. 149 “Therefore fear Allah and obey me.” 150 And obey not the command of the prodigal, 151 Who cause corruption in the land and do not amend." 152 They said: Thou art but one of the bewitched; 153 "You are but a human being like us. Then bring us a sign if you are of the truthful." 154 He said, "Here is a she-camel. She shall have her turn of drinking, as you have yours, each on an appointed day, 155 “And do not touch her with evil intentions for the punishment of the Great Day will seize you.” 156 But they cruelly slaughtered her - and then they had cause to regret it: 157 so the punishment came down upon them. Surely in that there is a sign, but most of them would not believe. 158 And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful. 159
