Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Ha, Meem. 1 CONSIDER this divine writ, clear in itself and clearly showing the truth! 2 We have indeed sent it down in a blessed night indeed it is We Who warn. 3 on that night every wise decree is specified 4 [Every] matter [proceeding] from Us. Indeed, We were to send [a messenger] 5 A Mercy from your Lord, He is the Hearer, the Knower. 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you are certain (of your faith). 7 There is no god but He; He gives life and makes to die; your Lord and the Lord of your fathers, the ancients. 8 Nay, but they play in doubt. 9 Therefore keep waiting for the day when the heaven shall bring an evident smoke, 10 which will smother the people. They will say, "This is a painful torment. 11 Our Lord! remove from us the torment, verily we shall become believers. 12 How should they have the Reminder, seeing a clear Messenger already came to them, 13 Then they turned away from him and said, "[He was] taught [and is] a madman." 14 Verily We shall remove the torment for a while; but verily ye shall revert. 15 On the day when We will seize (them) with the most violent seizing; surely We will inflict retribution. 16 ۞ And indeed We tried before them Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people, when there came to them a noble Messenger [i.e. Musa (Moses)], 17 saying, 'Deliver to me God's servants; I am for you a faithful Messenger, 18 Do not rise up against Allah, I come to you with clear authority. 19 and, behold, it is with my Sustainer - and your Sustainer - that I seek refuge against all your endeavours to revile me. 20 "If ye believe me not, at least keep yourselves away from me." 21 (But they were aggressive), so he [Musa (Moses)] called upon his Lord (saying): "These are indeed the people who are Mujrimun (disbelievers, polytheists, sinners, criminals, etc.)." 22 (The reply came:) "March forth with My Servants by night: for ye are sure to be pursued. 23 and leave the sea becalmed [between thee and Pharaoh's men]: for, verily, they are a host destined to be drowned!" 24 How many of gardens and springs do they [Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people] left. 25 And fields and stately mansions, 26 And the comfort they enjoyed. 27 That is what We did; and We made another nation their heirs. 28 Neither heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they respited; 29
