In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
O thou folded in garments! 1 Rise to pray in the night except a little, 2 A half thereof, or abate a little thereof 3 or add to it a little; and recite the Qur'an slowly and distinctly. 4 Soon shall We send down to thee a weighty Message. 5 Indeed, the hours of the night are more effective for concurrence [of heart and tongue] and more suitable for words. 6 True, there is for thee by day prolonged occupation with ordinary duties: 7 And remember thou the name of thy Lord, and devote thyself to Him with an exclusive devotion. 8 The Sustainer of the east and the west [is He]: there is no deity save Him: hence, ascribe to Him alone the power to determine thy fate, 9 Bear patiently with what they say, and ignore them politely. 10 Leave it to Me to deal with the deniers, who live a life of comfort, and bear with them a little longer. 11 We have heavy fetters and a blazing Fire in store for them; 12 And a Food that chokes, and a Penalty Grievous. 13 On a day when the earth and the mountains will tremble, and the mountains turn into dunes of flowing sand. 14 BEHOLD, [O men,] We have sent unto you an apostle who shall bear witness to the truth before you, even as We sent an apostle unto Pharaoh: 15 and Pharaoh rebelled against the apostle, whereupon We took him to task with a crushing grip. 16 So how will you save yourselves, if you disbelieve, on a day that will turn children old? 17 [the Day] on which the skies shall be rent asunder, [and] His promise [of resurrection] fulfilled? 18 Verily, this is an admonition, therefore whosoever will, let him take a Path to His Lord! 19
