We sent Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his nobles. He said, "I am the messenger of the Lord of the Universe," 46 Yet when he brought forth Clear Signs from Us, then lo, they burst into laughter. 47 even though each sign We showed them was greater than the previous one. We afflicted them with torment so that they might return [to the right path]. 48 They said, "Magician, pray to your Lord for us through your covenant with Him (If he saves us from the torment), we shall certainly seek guidance". 49 Then when We had removed from them the torment, behold they were breaking their promise. 50 And Pharaoh proclaimed among his people: “My people, do I not have dominion over Egypt, and are these streams not flowing beneath me? Can't you see? 51 Or am I [not] better than this one who is insignificant and hardly makes himself clear? 52 Then why have there not been placed upon him bracelets of gold or come with him the angels in conjunction?" 53 He (Pharaoh) intimidated his nation, so they obeyed him, for they were a sinning nation. 54 So, when they had angered Us, We took vengeance on them, and We drowned them all together; 55 and We made them a thing of the past, and We made them an example to later people. 56
