Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
Ha Mim! 1 By the Book that makes things clear, 2 that We sent down during a Blessed Night. We are ever warning. 3 On which all affairs are sorted out and decided 4 by Our command. Verily, We were set to send a Messenger 5 as a mercy from thy Lord (surely He is the All-hearing, the All-knowing) 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, if you would be sure. 7 There is no deity save Him: He grants life and deals death: He is your Sustainer as well as the Sustainer of your forebears of old. 8 Yet they are in doubt, playing. 9 So wait thou the day whereon the heaven will bring forth a manifest smoke: 10 Covering the people, this is a painful torment. 11 (Then they will say): Our Lord relieve us of the torment. Lo! we are believers. 12 [But] how shall this remembrance avail them [at the Last Hour,] seeing that an apostle had previously come unto them, clearly expounding the truth, 13 Yet they turned away from him and said: one tutored, one distraced. 14 We shall remove the torment for a while but you will revert to your old ways. 15 On the day when We will seize (them) with the most violent seizing; surely We will inflict retribution. 16 ۞ We had certainly tested the people of the Pharaoh before them to whom a noble Messengers had come, saying, 17 Who said, “Give the bondmen of Allah into my custody; I am indeed a trustworthy Noble Messenger for you.” 18 And saying: Be not proud against Allah. Lo! I bring you a clear warrant. 19 I seek protection from my Lord and your Lord from your decision of stoning me. 20 But if you do not believe what I say, leave me alone (and desist from laying hands on me).” 21 Then he called upon his Lord: “These are a criminal people.” 22 We told him, "Leave the city with My servants during the night. You will be pursued. 23 And leave the sea intervening; surely they are a host that shall be drowned. 24 How many gardens did they leave behind, and how many fountains 25 and sown fields and splendid mansions, 26 and what prosperity they had rejoiced in! 27 Thus (was their end)! And We made other people inherit (those things)! 28 and neither sky nor earth shed tears over them, nor were they allowed a respite. 29
