۞ [And God will thus command:] "Assemble all those who were bent on evildoing, together with others of their ilk and [with] all that they were wont to worship 22 “Instead of Allah – and herd them to the path leading to hell.” 23 and detain them there; they will be called to account. 24 What aileth you that ye help not one another? 25 They will submit to questioning then, 26 They will turn upon one another, and question one another. 27 They will say: "It was you who used to come to us from the right side [i.e. from the right side of one of us and beautify for us every evil, order us for polytheism, and stop us from the truth i.e. Islamic Monotheism and from every good deed]." 28 They shall say: Nay, you (yourselves) were not believers; 29 And we had over you no authority, but ye were a people exorbitant. 30 But now our Sustainer's word has come true against us [as well]: verily, we are bound to taste [the fruit of our sins]. 31 We led you astray as we were ourselves astray." 32 Then verily, that Day, they will (all) share in the torment. 33 Verily, thus shall We deal with all who were lost in sin: 34 For they, when they were told that there is no god except Allah, would puff themselves up with Pride, 35 And were saying, "Are we to leave our gods for a mad poet?" 36 Nay, but he [whom you call a mad poet] has brought the truth; and he confirms the truth of [what the earlier of God's] message-bearers [have taught]. 37 You will indeed taste a painful punishment, 38 You will only be recompensed according to your deeds.” 39 Save single-minded slaves of Allah; 40 for them awaits a known provision, 41 Fruits, and they shall be highly honored, 42 In gardens of pleasure, 43 Facing one another on thrones, 44 a cup from a spring being passed round to them, 45 clear, delightful to those who drink it: 46 no headiness will be in it, and they will not get drunk thereon. 47 And besides them will be chaste women, restraining their glances, with big eyes (of wonder and beauty). 48 As though they were eggs hidden. 49 And they will all turn to one another, asking each other [about their past lives]. 50 A speaker of them will say: "Verily, I had a companion (in the world), 51 who was wont to ask [me,] 'Why - art thou really one of those who believe it to be true 52 After we are dead and have become all dust and bones shall we still be requited?' 53 He said: 'Will you look down?' 54 He therefore looked down and saw him amidst the blazing fire. 55 He shall say: By Allah! you had almost caused me to perish; 56 "Had it not been for the Grace of my Lord, I would certainly have been among those brought forth (to Hell)." 57 What, do we then not die 58 “Except our earlier death, and nor will we be punished?” 59 Truly, this is the supreme success! 60 For the like of this, then, let the workers work. 61 So is this welcome better, or the tree of Zaqqum? 62 Truly We have made it (as) a trail for the Zalimun (polytheists, disbelievers, wrong-doers, etc.). 63 It is a tree that grows at the bottom of Hell. 64 Its produce is as it were the heads of the serpents. 65 And verily they must eat thereof and fill their bellies therewith. 66 then on top of it they have a brew of boiling water, 67 then their return is to Hell. 68 They found their fathers in error, 69 So they in their footsteps are rushing. 70 And indeed most of the men of old went astray before them; 71 although, verily, We had sent warners unto them: 72 Observe, then, what was the end of those that had been warned, 73 EXCEPT for God's true servants, [most people are apt to go astray.] 74
