The Inevitable (Al-Waaqe'ah)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ When the Event inevitable cometh to pass, 1 There is no belying its coming to pass-- 2 (a calamitous Event) that shall turn things upside down: 3 When the earth shall be shaken with a (severe) shaking, 4 And the mountains shall be made to crumble with (an awful) crumbling, 5 So they will become like fine dust, scattered in a shaft of light. 6 You will become three categories: 7 So those on the right – how (fortunate) are those on the right! 8 And (as to) the companions of the left hand; how wretched are the companions of the left hand! 9 But the foremost shall be [they who in life were] the foremost [in faith and good works]: 10 These will be those Nearest to Allah: 11 In gardens of tranquility; 12 a good many of those of olden times, 13 And a few of those (foremost) will be from the later time (generations). 14 Seated on couches wrought in gold and encrusted with precious stones, 15 reclining on them facing each other; 16 Immortal youths will wait upon them 17 With goblets and ewers and a cup of limpid drink. 18 by which their minds will not be clouded and which will not make them drunk; 19 And fruit that they prefer 20 and the meat of any bird that they may desire; 21 and fair maidens with large, lustrous eyes 22 like pearls preserved in their shells, 23 shall be their recompense for their deeds. 24 They shall not hear therein vain or sinful discourse, 25 (Naught) but the saying: Peace, (and again) Peace. 26 As for the People on the Right, how fortunate shall be the people on the Right! 27 Amid thornless lote-trees, 28 and banana trees, 29 and extended shade, 30 and outpoured waters, 31 And abundant fruit, 32 never-failing and never out of reach. 33 and raised couches 34 We have formed them in a distinctive fashion, 35 We have made them virgins, 36 intensely loving and of matching age. 37 For those on the right hand; 38
