The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ I do not (need to) swear by this town (Mecca) 1 And you are free (from sin, to punish the enemies of Islam on the Day of the conquest) in this city (Makkah). 2 And by oath of your forefather Ibrahim, and by you – his illustrious son! 3 That We created man in toil and trouble. 4 Does he think that no one can overpower him? 5 He boasts, "I have spent wealth abundant!" 6 Does he think that no one has seen him? 7 Did We not assign unto him two eyes 8 And a tongue and two lips? 9 And guide him to the parting of the mountain ways? 10 But he did not venture to scale the difficult steep. 11 What could let you know what the height is! 12 It is freeing someone's neck from slavery; 13 or giving food on a day of hunger 14 to an orphan near of kin; 15 and downtrodden destitute person, (so that he would be of) 16 so that he becomes one of those who believe, charge each other to be patient, and charge each other to be merciful. 17 These are the people of the right hand. 18 And those who disbelieve Our signs - they are the fellows of the lefthand. 19 On them will be Fire vaulted over (all round). 20
