The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
I CALL TO witness the sun and his early morning splendour, 1 And the moon when it follows the sun, 2 by the day, when it displays it, 3 and by the night when it enshrouds him! 4 By the heaven and Who built it, 5 and by the earth and by Him Who stretched it out; 6 by the soul and how He formed it, 7 and imbued it with (the consciousness of) its evil and its piety: 8 prosperous is he who purified it, 9 and failed has he who seduces it. 10 The tribe of Thamud denied with rebellion. 11 When the most wicked among them stood up in defiance. 12 the Messenger of Allah said to them: '(This is) the shecamel of Allah, let her drink' 13 But they gave him the lie, and hamstrung the she-camel. So their Lord destroyed them for their crime and razed their city to the ground. 14 God is not afraid of the result of what He had decreed. 15
