Pharaoh said to the chiefs around him, "Surely this man is a skilful sorcerer. 34 who desires to expel you from your land by his sorcery; what do you command?' 35 They answered: "Let him and his brother wait a while, and send unto all cities heralds 36 to bring thee every cunning sorcerer. 37 So the sorcerers were assembled at a fixed time on a day appointed. 38 and the people were told: "Will you join the assembly? 39 in order that we shall follow the sorcerers if they are the victors' 40 Now when the sorcerers came, they said unto Pharaoh: "Verily, we ought to have a great reward if it is we who prevail. 41 He said: "Yea, (and more),- for ye shall in that case be (raised to posts) nearest (to my person)." 42 Moses said to them: "Cast what you have to cast." 43 So they cast their ropes and staffs, saying: 'By Pharaoh's might, we shall be the victors' 44 Then Musa (Moses) threw his stick, and behold, it swallowed up all the falsehoods which they showed! 45 so the sorcerers were cast down, prostrating themselves, 46 They said, "We have believed in the Lord of the worlds, 47 the Lord of Moses and Aaron.' 48 Said [Pharaoh]: "Have you come to believe in him ere I have given you permission? Verily, he must be your master who has taught you magic! But in time you shall come to know [my revenge]: most certainly shall I cut off your hands and your feet in great numbers, because of [your] perverseness, and shall most certainly crucify you in great numbers, all together!" 49 They said, "There is no harm. To our Lord we shall return. 50 We are eager that our Lord should forgive us our offences, for that we are the first of the believers.' 51
