The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A questioner asked concerning a torment about to befall 1 which will inevitably seize the disbelievers. 2 from punishing them. He is the Lord of the Ascending Stairways, 3 To whom the angels and the soul take a day to ascend, whose length is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore endure with a goodly patience. 5 Surely they think it to be far off, 6 But We see it (quite) near. 7 On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, 8 and the mountains will become like dyed tufts of wool, 9 And no friend will ask concerning his friend. 10 Though within sight of one another. The sinner would like to ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his sons, 11 his companion wife, his brother, 12 His kindred who sheltered him, 13 and of whoever [else] lives on earth, all of them - so that he could but save himself. 14 Never! That is indeed a blazing fire. 15 Dragging by the head, 16 It invites he who turned his back [on truth] and went away [from obedience] 17 and who accumulated wealth without spending it for a good purpose. 18 ۞ Surely man was created fretful, 19 when misfortune touches him he starts lamenting, 20 And refraining, when good reaches him. 21 except those who are steadfast 22 Those who are constant at their prayer 23 those who give a due share of their wealth 24 For the beggar and the destitute; 25 who acknowledge the Day of Judgment, 26 And those who fear the punishment of their Lord. 27 For their Lord's displeasure is the opposite of Peace and Tranquillity;- 28 And those who of their private parts are guards. 29 Except with their wives and the (women slaves and captives) whom their right hands possess, for (then) they are not to be blamed, 30 But those who trespass beyond this are transgressors;- 31 And those who of their trusts and their covenant are keepers. 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies; 33 And those who are attentive at their worship. 34 such people will receive due honor in Paradise. 35
