Thamud (people) belied the Messenger. 141 When their brother Salih said unto them: Will ye not ward off (evil)? 142 "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 143 so fear you God, and obey you me.' 144 And I do not ask you any reward for it; my reward is only with the Lord of the worlds: 145 "Do you think that you will be left secure [forever] in the midst of what you have here and now? 146 "Gardens and Springs, 147 And fields of crops and palm trees with softened fruit? 148 Will you still skilfully hew houses out of the mountains? 149 So fear Allah and obey me. 150 And obey not the command of the extravagant. 151 those who spread corruption in the land instead of putting things right." 152 They said, "You are only of those affected by magic. 153 You are naught but a mortal like ourselves; so bring a sign if you are one of the truthful. 154 Replied he: "This she-camel shall have a share of water, and you shall have a share of water, on the days appointed [therefor]; 155 Do not cause her to suffer lest you become subject to the torment of the great day (of Judgment)." 156 So they hamstrung her, and in the morning could only regret. 157 for the suffering [predicted by Salih,] befell them [then and there]. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. 158 Your Lord is Majestic and All-merciful. 159
