Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha-Meem. (Alphabets of the Arabic language – Allah, and to whomever He reveals, know their precise meanings.) 1 By the manifest Book (this Quran) that makes things clear, 2 We have sent it down in a blessed night (We are ever warning) 3 Therein is decreed every affair of wisdom 4 Amran (i.e. a Command or this Quran or the Decree of every matter) from Us. Verily, We are ever sending (the Messengers), 5 as a Mercy from your Lord. Surely He is All-Hearing, All-Seeing, 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you are certain (of your faith). 7 There is no Allah save Him. He quickeneth and giveth death; your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. 8 But they are in doubt, amusing themselves. 9 So be on the watch for a day when heaven shall bring a manifest smoke 10 engulfing the people; this will be a painful punishment. 11 'Our Lord, remove this punishment from us, we are believers' 12 [But] how shall this remembrance avail them [at the Last Hour,] seeing that an apostle had previously come unto them, clearly expounding the truth, 13 whereupon they turned their backs on him and said, "Taught [by others] is he, a madman"? 14 Verily We shall remove the torment for a while; but verily ye shall revert. 15 But on that Day We will assault them most mightily, and then We shall revenge! 16 ۞ And before them We indeed tried the people of Firaun, and an Honourable Noble Messenger came to them. 17 "Deliver the creatures of God to me. I am the trusted messenger sent to you. 18 Do not think yourselves to be above God: I have come to you with clear authority. 19 And lo! I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me to death. 20 If you do not want to believe, leave me alone". 21 Then he called to his Lord: "These are a sinful people." 22 "Journey by night with My devotees," (it was said); "you will certainly be pursued. 23 And leave thou the sea divided: verily they are a host to be drowned. 24 How many gardens and fountains they left behind them, 25 and sown fields, fine sitting places, 26 and pleasant things in which they delighted! 27 Thus (it was)! And We made other people inherit them (i.e. We made the Children of Israel to inherit the kingdom of Egypt). 28 And the heaven and the earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. 29
