The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ I swear by this city, Makkah - 1 And thou shalt be allowed in yonder city 2 and [I call to witness] parent and offspring: 3 that We have created man into a life of toil and trial. 4 What, does he think none has power over him, 5 He may say (boastfully); Wealth have I squandered in abundance! 6 Does he believe that none has seen him? 7 Have We not made for him a pair of eyes? 8 a tongue, and two lips, 9 And shown unto him the two highways? 10 Yet, he has not entered into Aqaba 11 And what do you know what that difficult steep is? 12 (It is:) freeing the bondman; 13 or giving food upon a day of hunger 14 An orphan near of kin, 15 Or a poor man cleaving to the dust. 16 so that he becomes one of those who believe, charge each other to be patient, and charge each other to be merciful. 17 Such are the Companions of the Right Hand. 18 and [as for] those who are bent on denying the truth of Our revelations, they are the people of the left hand, 19 On them is fire closed over. 20
