The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
CONSIDER the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 And the day when it shines in all its glory, 2 and by Him Who created the male and the female: 3 Verily, (the ends) ye strive for are diverse. 4 For him that gives and fears (Allah) 5 And accepts the best, 6 We will ease him toward ease. 7 But he who is a greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient, 8 And who belieth the Good, 9 We shall surely ease him to the Hardship; 10 His riches will not save him when he perisheth. 11 Verify on us is the guidance 12 and to Us belong the Last and the First. 13 Wherefore I have warned you of Fire flaming, 14 [the fire] which none shall have to endure but that most hapless wretch 15 Who denied (the truth) and turned away. 16 And avoid it shall the most pious, 17 He who spends his wealth for increase in self-purification, 18 not as payment for any favours that he received, 19 but only out of a longing for the countenance of his Sustainer, the All-Highest: 20 Will surely be gratified. 21
