The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Someone has (needlessly) demanded to experience the torment (of God), 1 The infidels, of which there is no averter. 2 from God, the Lord of the Stairways. 3 On that Day (of Judgment), long as fifty thousand years, the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him. 4 But be patient (O Muhammad) with a patience fair to see. 5 They see it [the Day of Judgement] to be far off, 6 While we behold it nigh: 7 The day when the sky will be like molten silver. 8 The mountains like the tufts of (carded) wool, 9 No loyal friend will ask another loyal friend 10 as they are given sight of them. The sinner will wish that he might ransom himself from the chastisement of that day even by his sons, 11 And his spouse and his brother. 12 and of all the kinsfolk who ever sheltered him, 13 and whosoever is in the earth, all together, so that then it might deliver him. 14 But nay! Verily, all [that awaits him] is a raging flame, 15 Plucking out (his being) right to the skull!- 16 It shall call him who turneth back and backslideth. 17 And collected [wealth] and hoarded. 18 ۞ Verily man is impatient by nature: 19 bewailing when evil befalls him, 20 And, when good befalleth him, grudging; 21 Except the observers of prayer - 22 Those who remain steadfast to their prayer; 23 And those in whose wealth there is a known right, 24 For the beggar and the destitute; 25 And those who believe the Day of Judgement to be true. 26 and who stand in dread of their Sustainer's chastisement 27 Indeed, the punishment of their Lord is not that from which one is safe - 28 who guard their privates 29 Except with their wives and the bondwomen in their possession, for there is no reproach on them. 30 But those who seek more than this will be transgressors; 31 And those who respect their trusts and covenants; 32 and who stand firm whenever they bear witness; 33 And those who keep a guard on their prayer, 34 Those shall be in gardens, honored. 35
