The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O you who are clothed! 1 arise and warn, 2 And your Lord do magnify, 3 And thine inner self purify! 4 And stay away from idols. 5 do not bestow a favour in the expectation of receiving more in return; 6 And for the sake of your Lord, patiently endure. 7 And [warn all men that] when the trumpet-call [of resurrection] is sounded, 8 So that is a tough day. 9 For the infidels, not easy. 10 Leave Me alone [to deal] with him whom I have created alone, 11 and to whom I have granted resources in abundance, 12 And sons present by his side. 13 And spread [everything] before him, easing [his life]. 14 Yet is he greedy-that I should add (yet more);- 15 Never. He is refractory of Our signs. 16 I will make a distressing punishment overtake him. 17 He reflected, and then determined 18 (Self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! 19 Again (self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! - 20 Then looked he, 21 Then he frowned and he scowled; 22 then he retreated, and waxed proud. 23 Then he said: naught is this but magic from of old; 24 Nothing more than the speech of a man!" 25 I will surely roast him in the Scorching. 26 Would that you really knew what hell is! 27 It shall not spare, nor leave. 28 It strips away the hide of man. 29 Over it are nineteen [angels]. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
