In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O THOU enwrapped one! 1 Stand up for worship during the night, except for some part of it. 2 A half thereof, or abate a little thereof 3 Or increase thereto. And intone the Qur'an with measured intonations. 4 Verily We! anon We shall cast upon thee a weighty word. 5 Surely getting up at night is the best means of subduing the self and is more suitable for uprightness in speech. 6 surely in the day thou hast long business. 7 Remember the Name of your Lord and dedicate yourself devoutly to Him. 8 Lord of the East and the West; there is no Allah save Him; so choose thou Him alone for thy defender - 9 And bear with patience what they utter, and part from them with a fair leave-taking. 10 And leave Me alone [to deal] with those who give the lie to the truth - those who enjoy the blessings of life [without any thought of God] - and bear thou with them for a little while: 11 Verily with Us are heavy fetters and Scorch. 12 and food that chokes, and grievous suffering 13 on the Day the earth and mountains shall shake and the mountains crumble into shifting sand dunes. 14 Lo! We have sent unto you a messenger as witness against you, even as We sent unto Pharaoh a messenger. 15 But Pharaoh rebelled against the messenger, whereupon We seized him with no gentle grip. 16 How, then, will you guard yourselves, if you disbelieve, on the day which shall make children grey-headed? 17 Whereon the heaven will be cleft asunder? His Promise is certainly to be accomplished. 18 This, surely, is an admonition. So let him who will, take the right path to his Lord. 19
