The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the Star when it setteth, 1 Your Companion is neither astray nor being misled. 2 Nor does he speak of (his own) desire. 3 Indeed it is not except a Revelation which is revealed, 4 taught him by one terrible in power, 5 The Lord of Strength; so he attained completion, 6 appearing in the horizon's loftiest part, 7 Then he approached and descended 8 And was at a distance of two bows' length or (even) nearer, 9 And he revealed to His Servant what he revealed. 10 The [servant's] heart did not give the lie to what he saw: 11 Will you then argue with him about what he saw? 12 Indeed, he saw him in another descent 13 by the lote-tree at the farthest boundary, 14 near which is Paradise. 15 when the lote tree was covered in mystic splendour. 16 [And withal,] the eye did not waver, nor yet did it stray: 17 For truly did he see, of the Signs of his Lord, the Greatest! 18 (Can anything as such be considered true) of al-Lat, al-Uzza, 19 And subsequently the third, the Manat? 20 "What! For you the males and for Him the females?" 21 Behold, such would be indeed a division most unfair! 22 They are naught but names which you have named, you and your fathers; Allah has not sent for them any authority. They follow naught but conjecture and the low desires which (their) souls incline to; and certainly the guidance has come to them from their Lord. 23 Does man imagine that whatever he wishes for is right for him? 24 But unto Allah belongeth the after (life), and the former. 25
