A multitude from the ancients. 39 And a multitude of those of later time. 40 The Companions of the Left Hand,- what will be the Companions of the Left Hand? 41 mid burning winds and boiling waters 42 and under the shadow of black smoke, 43 which will neither be cool nor soothing. 44 Indeed they were among favours before this. 45 And they persisted in the great violation. 46 and would say: "What! After we have died and become mere dust and bones, shall we, forsooth, be raised from the dead? 47 And also our forefathers? 48 (Muhammad), say, "All the ancient and later generations 49 Will all be brought together to the tryst of an appointed day. 50 Then you erring ones, you that cried lies, 51 "Ye will surely taste of the Tree of Zaqqum. 52 filling your bellies with it; 53 "And drink boiling water on top of it, 54 like a thirsty camel". 55 This is their reception on the Day of Justice. 56 It is We Who created you, so why do you not accept the truth? 57 Have ye seen that which ye emit? 58 Is it you that create it or are We the creators? 59 We have [indeed] decreed that death shall be [ever-present] among you: but there is nothing to prevent Us 60 in replacing you with another creation like you, changing you into a form which you do not know. 61 And you have indeed learnt about the first creation, so why do you not ponder? 62 Have you considered the seeds you till? 63 Is it you that cause it to grow, or are We the causers of growth? 64 If We willed, We could make it [dry] debris, and you would remain in wonder, 65 “We have been penalised; 66 “In fact, we were unfortunate!” 67 So what is your opinion regarding the water that you drink? 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds or We? 69 If We so pleased, We certainly could make it salty. Why, then, are you not grateful? 70 Have you considered the fire you kindle? 71 Is it you who have produced its tree or is it We who have produced it? 72 We have made it a reminder and provision for the travelers, 73 Then celebrate with praises the name of thy Lord, the Supreme! 74
