He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned (his) back, 1 Because the blind man had come in his august presence. 2 And what should teach thee? Perchance he would cleanse him, 3 Or that he might receive admonition, and that the admonition might profit him? 4 As to one who regards Himself as self-sufficient, 5 to him thou attendest 6 though you will not be questioned even if he never purifies himself. 7 And he who comes to thee eagerly 8 While he fears [Allah], 9 you pay him no heed. 10 By no means (should it be so)! For it is indeed a Message of instruction: 11 (and whoso wills, shall remember it) 12 (It is) in Books held (greatly) in honour, 13 Exalted (in dignity), kept pure and holy, 14 Written by the hands of emissaries. 15 Noble and righteous. 16 Woe to man! How ungrateful he is! 17 [Does man ever consider] out of what substance [God] creates him? 18 Out of a drop of sperm He creates him, and thereupon determines his nature, 19 Then made his passage easy (at birth); 20 Then He causeth him to die, and putteth him in his grave; 21 Then, when He will, He bringeth him again to life. 22 By no means hath he fulfilled what Allah hath commanded him. 23 Let man reflect on the food he eats. 24 For that We pour forth water in abundance, 25 and split the earth, splitting, 26 Thereby produced grain in it. 27 And grapes and vegetables 28 and olives, and palms, 29 and burgeoning enclosed gardens 30 And fruits and grasses: 31 A provision for you and for your cattle. 32 And when the Blast shall sound, 33 Man will fly from his brother, 34 his mother, his father, 35 and his consort and his children; 36 Each one of them, that Day, will have enough concern (of his own) to make him indifferent to the others. 37 [Some] faces, that Day, will be bright - 38 Laughing, rejoicing at good news (of Paradise). 39 And [other] faces, that Day, will have upon them dust. 40 enveloped by darkness. 41 Those are the disbelievers, the wicked ones. 42
