Mary (Maryam)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
KAF HA YA 'AIN SAD. 1 (This is) a recital of the Mercy of thy Lord to His servant Zakariya. 2 When he softly prayed to his Lord. 3 saying, 'O my Lord, behold the bones within me are feeble and my head is all aflame with hoariness. And in calling on Thee, my Lord, I have never been hitherto unprosperous. 4 I am afraid of what my kinsmen will do after (my death) and my wife is barren. Lord, grant me a son 5 "Who shall inherit me, and inherit (also) the posterity of Ya'qub (Jacob) (inheritance of the religious knowledge and Prophethood, not the wealth, etc.). And make him, my Lord, one with whom You are Well-pleased!". 6 O Zakariya! surely We give you good news of a boy whose name shall be Yahya: We have not made before anyone his equal. 7 He said: O my Lord! in what wise shall there be for me a boy, whereas my wife hath been barren, and surely have reached an age of extreme degree? 8 He said: "So (it will be). Your Lord says; It is easy for Me. Certainly I have created you before, when you had been nothing!" 9 (Zakariya) said: "O my Lord! give me a Sign." "Thy Sign," was the answer, "Shall be that thou shalt speak to no man for three nights, although thou art not dumb." 10 So he went forth to his people from his place of worship, then he made known to them that they should glorify (Allah) morning and evening. 11 (To his son came the command): "O Yahya! take hold of the Book with might": and We gave him Wisdom even as a youth, 12 and We also endowed him with tenderness and purity, and he was exceedingly pious 13 And dutiful towards his parents, and he was neither an arrogant nor disobedient (to Allah or to his parents). 14 And peace is upon him the day he was born, and the day he will taste death, and the day he will be raised alive. 15
