The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ Nay! I swear by this city. 1 And you are free (from sin, to punish the enemies of Islam on the Day of the conquest) in this city (Makkah). 2 and [I call to witness] parent and offspring: 3 Verily We have created man into toil and hardship. 4 Does he think that never will anyone overcome him? 5 And he saith: I have destroyed vast wealth: 6 What, does he think none has seen him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 and a tongue, and two lips, 9 and shown him the two paths? 10 Yet he has not assaulted the steep; 11 And what do you know what that difficult steep is? 12 (It is) the freeing of a slave, 13 or giving food on a day of hunger 14 of an orphan near of kin, 15 or of a needy [stranger] lying in the dust 16 and, then besides this, he be one of those who believed, and enjoined upon one another steadfastness and enjoined upon one another compassion. 17 These are the people of the right hand. 18 As for those who rejected Our Signs, they are the People of the Left Hand. 19 over them is a Fire covered down. 20
