We sent Moses with Our signs to the Pharaoh and his nobles. He said: "I have been sent by the Lord of all the worlds." 46 But when he showed them Our signs they laughed at them, 47 And not a sign We shewed them but it was greater than the like thereof; and We laid hold of them with the torment that haply they might turn. 48 'Sorcerer' they said, 'pray to your Lord for us in accordance to the covenant He has made with you, and surely we shall be rightly guided' 49 But when We removed from them the chastisement, lo! they broke the pledge. 50 Pharaoh called to his people, "My people, is the Kingdom of Egypt not mine? And these rivers that flow at my feet, are they not mine? Do you not see? 51 "Am I not better than this one [Musa (Moses)], who is Mahin [has no honour nor any respect, and is weak and despicable] and can scarcely express himself clearly? 52 Why have bracelets of gold not been given to him and why have some angels not accompanied him?" 53 He (Pharaoh) intimidated his nation, so they obeyed him, for they were a sinning nation. 54 So when they vexed Us, We took vengeance on them, and We drowned them all. 55 We made them a precedent, an example for later peoples. 56
