Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
HaMeem 1 By the manifest Book (this Quran) that makes things clear, 2 Verily We have sent it down on a blessed night, verily We were to become warners. 3 In it every wise matter is determined 4 Amran (i.e. a Command or this Quran or the Decree of every matter) from Us. Verily, We are ever sending (the Messengers), 5 in pursuance of thy Sustainer's grace [unto man]. Verily, He alone is all-hearing, all-knowing, 6 He is the Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if only you would have strong faith. 7 There is no god but He. He quickeneth and causeth to die: your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. 8 Rather they are in doubt, playing. 9 Therefore keep waiting for the day when the heaven shall bring an evident smoke, 10 Which would envelope mankind. That would be a grievous affliction. 11 (Then they will say): Our Lord relieve us of the torment. Lo! we are believers. 12 How is it possible for them to accept guidance, whereas a Noble Messenger who speaks clearly has already come to them? 13 but then they turned away from him, saying: 'He is tutored, mad' 14 Verily We shall remove the torment for a while; but verily ye shall revert. 15 on the Day when We shall seize [all sinners] with a most mighty onslaught, We shall, verily, inflict Our retribution [on you as well]! 16 ۞ AND, INDEED, [long] before their time did We try Pharaoh's people [in the same way]: for there came unto them a noble apostle, [who said:] 17 "Give in unto me, O God's bondmen! Verily, I am an apostle [sent] unto you, worthy of trust! 18 Do not set yourselves above God: I bring you clear authority. 19 I have taken refuge in my Lord and your Lord against your stoning me to death. 20 And if ye put no faith in me, then let me go. 21 But then, [when they beset him with their enmity,] he called out to his Sustainer, "These are [indeed] people lost in sin!" 22 (The reply came:) "March forth with My Servants by night: for ye are sure to be pursued. 23 And leave the sea becalmed; they are a drowned host.' 24 How many gardens and fountains did they leave behind, 25 and cornfields and splendid buildings, 26 And pleasant things wherein they took delight! 27 We gave these as an inheritance to other people. 28 So the heaven and the earth did not weep for them, nor were they respited. 29
