The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
A questioner asked concerning a torment about to befall 1 those who deny the truth. [Know, then, that] nothing can ward it off, 2 [It is] from Allah, owner of the ways of ascent. 3 To Him the angels and the Spirit mount up, in a day whereof the measure is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore patiently endure, in the best manner (O dear Prophet Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him). 5 behold, men look upon that [reckoning] as something far away 6 but We see it to be very near. 7 The day when the sky will be like molten silver. 8 and the mountains will become like dyed tufts of wool, 9 no loyal friend shall question loyal friend, 10 Though within sight of one another. The sinner would like to ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his sons, 11 And his wife and his brother, 12 And the nearest of his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, 13 and whosoever is in the earth, altogether, so that it might save him. 14 By no means! For the raging flames of the fire 15 stripping away his skin, 16 and it shall call him who withdrew and turned his back 17 and amassed wealth and covetously hoarded it. 18 ۞ Verily man is impatient by nature: 19 Fretful when evil befalleth him 20 and whenever good fortune comes to him, he grows niggardly. 21 Save worshippers. 22 Who persevere in devotion, 23 and in whose possessions there is a due share, acknowledged [by them,] 24 For those who beg, and for the needy who cannot even ask. 25 And those who believe in the Day of Recompense, 26 And those who are fearful of their Lord's doom - 27 for none is secure from the punishment of their Lord, 28 And those who protect their private organs (from adultery). 29 except from their wives and what their right hands own, for these they are not blameworthy. 30 So those who desire more than this – it is they who are the transgressors. 31 And those who fulfil their trusts and covenants, 32 Who uphold their testimonies, 33 And those who guard their Salat (prayers) well. 34 They will be in gardens, honored. 35
