We also sent Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his Council, and he said, 'Surely, I am the Messenger of the Lord of all Being.' 46 So when he brought Our signs to them, they started mocking at them! 47 And not a sign We showed them, but it was greater than its sister sign; and We seized them with chastisement, that haply they should return. 48 They said, "Sorcerer, call on your Lord for us, by virtue of His pledge to you: we shall certainly accept guidance," 49 But when We removed the torment from them, behold! They broke their covenant (that they will believe if We remove the torment for them). 50 And Pharaoh called out among his people; he said, "O my people, does not the kingdom of Egypt belong to me, and these rivers flowing beneath me; then do you not see? 51 Or am I [not] better than this one who is insignificant and hardly makes himself clear? 52 Why, then, have armlets of gold not been set upon him, or angels sent along with him? 53 Thus, he made dimwits out of his people and they followed him. They, certainly, were a sinful people. When they invoked Our anger, 54 So when they vexed Us, We took vengeance on them, and We drowned them all. 55 and so We made them a thing of the past, and an example to those who would come after them. 56
