a good many of olden times, 39 and also a large throng from those of later times. 40 The Companions of the Left (O Companions of the Left!) 41 Amidst scorching wind and scalding water. 42 scalding water and under a shadow of black smoke, 43 [shadows] neither cooling nor soothing. 44 and before that they lived at ease, 45 And were stubborn upon the great sin (of disbelief). 46 and constantly said: 'What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we then be restored to life? 47 “And also our forefathers?” 48 Say (unto them, O Muhammad): Lo! those of old and those of later time 49 Are going to be assembled on the appointed time of a Day Known. 50 and then, verily, O you who have gone astray and called the truth a lie, 51 "You verily will eat of the trees of Zaqqum. 52 "Then you will fill your bellies therewith, 53 And thereon ye will drink of boiling water, 54 "So you will drink (that) like thirsty camels!" 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Requital. 56 We have created you, so why do you not believe? 57 Have you ever considered that [seed] which you emit? 58 Do you make a human out of it, or is it We Who create? 59 We have decreed Death to be your common lot, and We are not to be frustrated 60 To transfigure you and create you in (forms) that you know not. 61 You certainly knew about (your) first development. Why do you not take heed? 62 And have you seen that [seed] which you sow? 63 Is it you that make it grow, or are We the Grower? 64 If We willed, surely We would make it chaff, so that ye would be left wondering. 65 (Saying:) 'We are laden with debts! 66 Aye! we are deprived! 67 See ye the water which ye drink? 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds or is it We Who brought it down? 69 If We willed, surely We would make it brackish. Wherefore give ye not thanks? 70 Have you considered the fire which you strike? 71 Was it ye who made the tree thereof to grow, or were We the grower? 72 We have made it as a reminder of hell and as a utility for travellers in the jungle. 73 Glorify, then, (O Prophet), the name of your Great Lord. 74
