The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ I swear by this city -- 1 And thou shalt be allowed in yonder city 2 And by the begetter and that which he begat, 3 Verily We have created man into toil and struggle. 4 Thinketh he, that none hath power over him? 5 He says (boastfully): "I have wasted wealth in abundance!" 6 Does he think that no one has seen him? 7 Did We not make two eyes for him? 8 a tongue, and two lips, 9 And did We not guide him to the two elevated things? 10 Yet he has not scaled the height. 11 And what will make you know the path that is steep? 12 It is freeing someone's neck from slavery; 13 And to feed in the day of hunger. 14 To an orphan near of kin. 15 Or to the indigent (down) in the dust. 16 then that he become of those who believe and counsel each other to be steadfast, and counsel each other to be merciful. 17 Those are the companions of the right. 18 But those who disbelieve in Our verses, they are the Companions of the Left, 19 The Fire will vault them over. 20
