A multitude from the ancients. 39 and a large group of those of later times. 40 And those on the left hand: What of those on the left hand? 41 They will live amid the scorching, 42 Under the shadow of thick black smoke 43 [shadows] neither cooling nor soothing. 44 For, behold, in times gone by they were wont to abandon themselves wholly to the pursuit of pleasures, 45 And they used to persist in the great violation, 46 And they used to say, “When we are dead and have turned into dust and bones, will we surely be raised again?” 47 "And also our forefathers?" 48 Say, "Indeed, the earlier ones and the later ones 49 Are going to be assembled on the appointed time of a Day Known. 50 Then you, the erring ones and those that gave the lie to the Truth, 51 shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum, 52 "Then you will fill your bellies therewith, 53 and drink boiling water on top of that, 54 You shall drink it as the thirsty camels drink." 55 This will be their welcome on the Day of Judgment. 56 We! it is We Who created you: wherefore confess ye not? 57 Did you ever consider the sperm that you emit? 58 Is it you who creates it, or are We the Creator? 59 We mete out death among you, and We are not to be outrun, 60 In order that We may bring in your place the likes of you and make you grow into what you know not. 61 You have known the first growth; so why will you not remember? 62 Just ponder over what you sow: 63 Is it you who cause them to grow or do We? 64 If We willed, We could make it [dry] debris, and you would remain in wonder, 65 (Saying), "We are indeed left with debts (for nothing): 66 "Indeed are we shut out (of the fruits of our labour)" 67 Have ye observed the water which ye drink? 68 Did you send it down from the clouds, or did We send it? 69 If We had so pleased, We could have made it bitter. So why would you not give thanks? 70 Have you thought about the fire you kindle? 71 Is it you who made the tree thereof to grow, or are We the Grower? 72 We have made it a Reminder (for the Hell-fire, in the Hereafter); and an article of use for the travellers (and all the others, in this world). 73 Then, exalt the Name of your Lord, the Great. 74
