The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ I swear by this city, Makkah - 1 And thou art an indweller of this city - 2 And (the mystic ties of) parent and child;- 3 We have certainly created man into hardship. 4 What, does he think none has power over him, 5 He saith: I have wasted riches plenteous. 6 What, does he think none has seen him? 7 Have We not made for him two eyes 8 and a tongue, and a pair of lips, 9 and shown him the two paths? 10 But he would not try to ascend the steep uphill road... 11 Would that you knew what Aqaba is! 12 It is freeing someone's neck from slavery; 13 or giving food on a day of hunger 14 of an orphaned relative 15 Or a needy person in misery 16 then that he become of those who believe and counsel each other to be steadfast, and counsel each other to be merciful. 17 They are the people of the right hand (and will succeed). 18 As for those who disbelieve in Our revelations, they are the people of the left 19 The Fire will vault them over. 20
