The tribe of Thamud rejected the Messengers. 141 when their brother Salih said unto them: "Will you not be conscious of God? 142 Verily I am unto you an apostle trusted. 143 So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 "And no reward whatever do I ask of you for it: my reward rests with none but the Sustainer of all the worlds. 145 "Do you think that you will be left secure [forever] in the midst of what you have here and now? 146 In these gardens and these springs, 147 The fields of corn and date-palm trees with soft and tender spathes, 148 And dwellings hewed out of mountains ingeniously? 149 So be mindful of God and listen to me. 150 “And do not follow those who exceed the limits.” 151 who do corruption in the earth, and set not things aright.' 152 They said, 'Thou art merely one of those that are bewitched; 153 You are naught but a mortal like ourselves; so bring a sign if you are one of the truthful. 154 He said: This is a she-camel; she shall have her portion of water, and you have your portion of water on an appointed time; 155 Do not touch her with malice so that punishment of a dreadful day seizes you' 156 Yet they hamstrung her, and in the morning they were remorseful, 157 But the Penalty seized them. Verily in this is a Sign: but most of them do not believe. 158 But, verily, thy Sustainer - He alone - is almighty, a dispenser of grace! 159
