Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
By the dawn 1 and the ten nights! 2 by the odd and even (8th and 9th Dhil-hajj) 3 And by the Night when it passeth away;- 4 Why is there an oath in this, for the intelligent? 5 Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with 'Aad - 6 of the columned (city) of Iram, 7 the like of which was never created in the countries? 8 (Also consider how He dealt with) the Thamud, who carved their houses out of the rocks in the valley. 9 and with Pharaoh of the [many] tent-poles? 10 Who all waxed exorbitant in the cities, 11 And multiplied iniquity therein? 12 Thus, your Lord afflicted them with torment; 13 For thy Lord is (as a Guardian) on a watch-tower. 14 And as for man, when his Lord tries him and [thus] is generous to him and favors him, he says, "My Lord has honored me." 15 However, when his Lord tests him by a measured amount of sustenance, he says, "God has disgraced me". 16 No! But you show no good to the orphan, 17 Nor do you urge one another to feed the poor, 18 And ye devour inheritance - all with greed, 19 and you have a love of wealth which can never be satisfied. 20 Nay! When the earth is pounded to powder, 21 And comes your Lord, and angels row on row, 22 And brought [within view], that Day, is Hell - that Day, man will remember, but what good to him will be the remembrance? 23 He will say, "Oh, would that I had provided beforehand for my life!" 24 So on that Day, none will punish as He will punish. 25 And His bonds will be such as none other can bind. 26 [To the righteous it will be said], "O reassured soul, 27 Return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him], 28 Enter thou among My righteous bondmen! 29 Enter then My garden." 30
