The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 And by oath of the day when it shines 2 And by oath of the One Who created the male and the female. 3 Certainly, your efforts and deeds are diverse (different in aims and purposes); 4 Then as for him who giveths and feareth Him. 5 and believes in the truth of the ultimate good 6 We shall surely ease him to the Easing. 7 But he who is greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient. 8 and cries lies to the reward most fair, 9 We will ease him toward difficulty. 10 and what will his wealth avail him when he goes down [to his grave]? 11 Truly! Ours it is (to give) guidance, 12 And to Us belong the End and the Beginning. 13 and so I warn you of the raging fire 14 where none shall burn except the most wicked, 15 Who belieth and turneth away. 16 and from which the cautious shall be distanced. 17 even he who gives his wealth. to purify himself 18 And is under no one's obligation to return his favour, 19 except the pleasure of their Lord, the Most High 20 and he shall surely be satisfied. 21
