The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A questioner questioned concerning the doom about to fall 1 Upon the disbelievers, which none can avert, 2 (A Penalty) from Allah, Lord of the Ways of Ascent. 3 On that Day (of Judgment), long as fifty thousand years, the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him. 4 Therefore be patient, with a beautiful patience; 5 Indeed, they see it [as] distant, 6 while We think that it is near at hand. 7 The Day that the sky will be like molten brass, 8 And the mountains will be like wool, 9 and no friend will ask about his friend, 10 as they are given sight of them. The sinner will wish that he might ransom himself from the chastisement of that day even by his sons, 11 His wife and his brother, 12 and of all the kinsfolk who ever sheltered him, 13 And all who are on the earth; so that this might deliver him. 14 Nay, verily it is a furnace 15 A remover of exteriors. 16 and it shall call him who withdrew and turned his back 17 who amassed and hoarded. 18 ۞ Indeed, the human was created grudging and impatient. 19 Being greatly grieved when evil afflicts him 20 And niggardly when good touches him; 21 Except those devoted to Salat (prayers) 22 Those who are constant at their prayer 23 And in whose wealth there is a right acknowledged 24 to those who ask [for help] and to the destitute; 25 And those who accept the truth of the judgment day 26 and fear the chastisement of their Lord – 27 Indeed, the punishment of their Lord is not that from which one is safe - 28 And those who guard their sex except from their wives and women slaves of old 29 save from their wives and what their right hands own, then not being blameworthy 30 But he who seeks to go beyond this, these it is that go beyond the limits-- 31 And those who are to their trusts and promises attentive 32 And those who are firm upon their testimonies. 33 And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer: 34 These will dwell in Gardens, honoured. 35
