Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
Ha Mim 1 I swear by the Book that makes manifest (the truth). 2 Surely We revealed it on a blessed night surely We are ever warning-- 3 On which all affairs are sorted out and decided 4 The command that We have been sending 5 as a Mercy from your Lord. Surely He is All-Hearing, All-Seeing, 6 He is the Lord of heaven and earth and all that is between them, if only you would really believe, 7 There is no god but He; He gives life and makes to die; your Lord and the Lord of your fathers, the ancients. 8 In fact, the unbelievers have doubts because of excessive involvement in worldly affairs. 9 So wait thou the day whereon the heaven will bring forth a manifest smoke: 10 which will smother the people. They will say, "This is a painful torment. 11 Then they will say, "Lord, relieve us from this torment, for truly we are now believers in You." 12 How could this punishment bring them to their senses when a Messenger evidently had come to them, 13 But they turned away from him, and said: "He is well-instructed, (but) possessed." 14 Indeed, We will remove the torment for a little. Indeed, you [disbelievers] will return [to disbelief]. 15 Upon the day when We shall assault most mightily, then We shall take Our vengeance. 16 ۞ And We had already tried before them the people of Pharaoh, and there came to them a noble messenger, 17 Saying: Give up to me the slaves of Allah. Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you. 18 Do not consider yourselves above God. I shall show you a manifest authority (in support of my truthfulness). 19 And lo! I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me to death. 20 “And if you do not believe in me, then have no relation with me.” 21 But then, [when they beset him with their enmity,] he called out to his Sustainer, "These are [indeed] people lost in sin!" 22 So go forth with My servants by night; surely you will be pursued: 23 And leave the sea behind at rest, for lo! they are a drowned host. 24 How many gardens and water-springs they left behind! 25 And fields and grand palaces! 26 and [all that] life of ease in which they used to delight! 27 We gave these as an inheritance to other people. 28 Neither heaven nor earth shed tears for them; nor were they respited, 29
