The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
I swear by the star when it goes down. 1 Your companion [Muhammad] has not strayed, nor has he erred, 2 nor does he speak out of his desire. 3 It is but a revelation revealed. 4 taught him by one terrible in power, 5 one endowed with immense wisdom. He came forth and stood poised, 6 While he was on the uppermost horizon. 7 and then drew near, and came close, 8 he was but two bows' length or even nearer, 9 He revealed to God's servant whatever he wanted. 10 The heart lied not in that which he saw. 11 Will ye therefore dispute with him concerning that which he hath seen? 12 And assuredly he saw him at another descent. 13 by the lote-tree at the farthest boundary, 14 Near it is the Paradise of Abode. 15 When there covered the Lote Tree that which covered [it]. 16 The eye did not turn aside, nor did it exceed the limit. 17 Indeed he saw some of the greatest signs of His Lord. 18 Have you ever thought about al-Lat and al-Uzza, 19 and, another, the third manat? 20 Is the male for you and for Him the female? 21 Then that is surely a very unjust distribution! 22 these are nothing but names which you yourselves have devised, you and your forefathers. God has sent down no authority for them. They follow nothing but conjecture and what their own selves desire, even though guidance has already come to them from their Lord! 23 Is the human to have whatever he fancies? 24 To Allah belongs the Eternal life and the first life. 25
