The News (Al-Naba')
40 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej) before The Snatchers (Al-Naze'aat)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ Of what do they ask one another? 1 Of the mighty tiding 2 About which they are in disagreement. 3 Nay, but in time they will come to understand [it]! 4 Again, by no means! anon they shall know. 5 Did We not make the earth a spreading, 6 and the mountains as pegs? 7 We created you in pairs, 8 And made sleep for you to rest, 9 made the night as a covering, 10 And We made the day for seeking livelihood. 11 and built above you seven strong firmaments, 12 And placed a lamp therein brightly burning. 13 and sent down heavy rains from the clouds 14 so that We may bring forth thereby grain and a variety of plants, 15 And gardens of thick growth. 16 Surely the day of decision is (a day) appointed: 17 On that day the trumpet will be sounded and you will come (to Us) in huge groups. 18 and when the skies are opened and become [as wide-flung] gates; 19 and the mountains will be set in motion and become a mirage. 20 Surely hell lies in wait, 21 A home for the rebellious. 22 therein to tarry for ages, 23 They will not taste therein [any] coolness or drink 24 But boiling and intensely cold water, 25 A fitting recompense (for them). 26 Indeed, they did not hope for a Reckoning, 27 And rejected Our signs as lies. 28 But all things We have enumerated in writing. 29 'Taste! We shall increase you not save in chastisement.' 30
