The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
One demanding, demanded the chastisement which must befall 1 The unbelievers-- there is none to avert it-- 2 From Allah, the Lord of the ways of Ascent. 3 The angels and the Ruh [Jibrael (Gabriel)] ascend to Him in a Day the measure whereof is fifty thousand years, 4 But be patient (O Muhammad) with a patience fair to see. 5 They deem it to be remote. 6 And We see it nigh. 7 The day when the sky will be like molten silver. 8 And the mountains shall be as tufts of wool 9 And friend shall not ask of friend 10 Though they shall be made to see one another. Fain would the guilty ransom himself from the torment of that Day by his children. 11 And his wife and his brother. 12 And his kindred who sheltered him, 13 and all the people of the earth, if that could deliver him. 14 Nay, verily it is a furnace 15 Plucking out (his being) right to the skull!- 16 It shall call him who turneth back and backslideth. 17 and who accumulated wealth without spending it for a good purpose. 18 ۞ Verily man is impatient by nature: 19 [As a rule,] whenever misfortune touches him, he is filled with self-pity; 20 And refraining, when good reaches him. 21 except those that pray, 22 Those who are regular in their prayers. 23 In whose wealth a due share is included 24 for the beggar and the outcast, 25 And those who testify to the Day of Requital. 26 And those who fear the torment of their Lord, 27 (from their Lord's chastisement none feels secure) 28 And those who protect their private organs (from adultery). 29 except from their wives and what their right hands own, for these they are not blameworthy. 30 but whoever goes beyond this is a transgressor; 31 and who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges: 32 and standby their witnessing, 33 And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer: 34 Those shall dwell in Gardens, honoured. 35
